The alert matters more than the map
A live map is something a parent opens. An alert is something that reaches them — "Aarav has boarded", "the bus has left school" — without them having to look. For most families the alert is the product.
There are three ways to send it, and each one reaches a different parent.
App notifications: free, instant, and only for smartphones
A push notification from the parent app arrives in a second or two and costs nothing to send, no matter how many there are. It can open straight onto the map. For parents with a smartphone and the app installed, nothing else comes close.
The catch is in those conditions. The parent needs a smartphone, needs to have installed the app and signed in, and needs to have allowed notifications. In most schools that covers the large majority of families — but rarely all of them.
WhatsApp: familiar, and paid per message
Almost every smartphone user in India opens WhatsApp many times a day, so a WhatsApp alert is read quickly and needs no new app. It still needs a smartphone and an internet connection.
Businesses send WhatsApp alerts through Meta's official platform, which charges for each message by category. Trip updates belong in the Utility category, which in India costs a small fraction of a rupee per message. Marketing messages cost several times more — so a school's provider must register its bus alerts as Utility templates, with plain trip facts and nothing promotional in them.
SMS: the one that reaches every phone
SMS works on the most basic phone, with no internet and no app. For a grandparent who does the school run, or a family with a keypad phone, it is the only alert that arrives.
In India every business SMS goes through DLT registration: the sender name and the exact wording of each message are approved in advance. One English SMS carries 160 characters; a Hindi SMS is sent as Unicode and carries 70, so the same alert in Hindi often costs twice as much. Each message costs a fraction of a rupee, which adds up when every child gets several alerts a day.
The sensible mix
Send app notifications to everyone who has the app — they are free and the fastest. Add SMS only for the families who do not have a smartphone, rather than for the whole school. Consider WhatsApp where parents are reluctant to install an app but live on WhatsApp.
That way no family is missed, and the school is not paying to send three copies of every alert to parents who only needed one.

Yes. The parent app works in Hindi and English. Hindi SMS is supported too, though it costs more per message because Hindi text is sent as Unicode.
What if a parent has turned notifications off?
Then the app cannot alert them, and the map is still there when they open it. For those parents SMS is the reliable fallback.
