What AIS 140 is
AIS 140 is the Automotive Industry Standard for vehicle tracking and emergency buttons, published by ARAI. It defines what a tracking device must report, how often, over which networks, and how the panic button must behave. Many states require an AIS 140-approved device on public and commercial passenger vehicles, including school buses.
Which vehicles need it
Requirements are set state by state, but the pattern is consistent: taxis, buses, school transport and other commercial passenger vehicles, and increasingly goods carriers on permits. Check your state transport department's current notification before buying hardware.
How to check a device will pass
Ask the vendor for these three things before installation.
- The device's ARAI/ICAT certificate against AIS 140.
- Confirmation the device can report to your state's backend, not only to the vendor's app.
- A record of the vehicle's registration, engine and chassis numbers attached to the device on the platform.
